A Dental Crown Could Help You

Find out how this restoration could breathe new life back into your smile.dental crowns

We know that nothing beats having a healthy smile; however, we also know that dental problems can occur suddenly. When this happens it’s important to have our Frederick and Urbana MD, dentists, Dr. Jared Lawson, Dr. EJ Stringer and Dr. Amadeus Lopez; periodontist Dr. Ashley Seals, oral surgeon, Dr. Brian Chang; endodontist, Dr. Pratik Patel; and orthodontist, Dr. Stephen Tigani, by your side to offer your smile the restorative dentistry it needs right away.

A dental crown is one of the most common restorations we use. This tooth-shaped cap is cemented in place over a tooth to become its new outer surface. There are many situations in which you could benefit from getting a dental crown in Frederick and Urbana MD. You may need a dental crown if:

  • You have a tooth that is severely weakened or worn
  • You have undergone root canal treatment
  • You have a fractured or broken tooth
  • You have extensive decay and a dental filling won’t be enough to support the tooth
  • You have a tooth that is misshapen or extremely discolored
  • You need to cover a dental implant
  • You need to support a dental bridge

In most cases, a dental crown is made from tooth-colored materials such as porcelain or composite resin, which can be matched to the shade of your teeth so that no one will be able to tell that you have a dental crown. Crowns are custom-made based on measurements taken of your tooth. Several steps must take place before you can get a dental crown.

First, the tooth needs to be prepared for the crown. This requires our general dentists to prepare the tooth to make sure the crown can fit over it. Once the tooth is prepped we will take impressions of the tooth. These impressions are then sent to a dental lab so they can create your custom dental crown. Since it can take up to a week to get your dental crown, we will place a temporary crown over the tooth to protect it in the meantime. Once your crown has been made, you will come in so that we can fit you with your new permanent restoration.
