Signs You May Need Orthodontic Treatment

Find out if you or your child’s smile could potentially benefit from getting braces or Invisalign.

It’s pretty rare to be born with a perfectly straight smile, but that’s okay. Our Urbana and Frederick, MD orthodontists and dentists have orthodonticsyou covered. Find out the perfect time to consider getting orthodontic treatment and the telltale signs that it might improve your smile and your oral health.

Here are some of most common situations that can easily be treated with braces or Invisalign:

Crowding

This is often the most common reason anyone comes to see our Urbana and Frederick general dentist for treatment. Crowding simply means that there isn’t enough room for all of your teeth to fit properly, so teeth crowd and overlap one another. Since teeth are so close together it can make it difficult to properly clean between teeth and even increase your chances for decay or gum disease. By treating this issue at an early age, we can improve your oral health for the long run.

Overbite

If you smile do you notice that the top teeth actually cover the bottom teeth? If so, then you may have an overbite. In an overbite, the top teeth stick out further than the bottom teeth. A severe overbite can increase your risk of damage to the front teeth or put too much pressure on other teeth and lead to injury.

Underbite

If you smile and your upper front teeth rest behind your lower teeth this is known as an underbite. This is the result of disproportionate jaw sizes and an underbite can cause issues speaking and chewing, and can affect the structure and appearance of your face.

Open bite

If you notice that your front teeth do not touch when you smile then you are probably dealing with an open bite. This can lead to speech problems (e.g. lisps) and difficulty eating and chewing.
