What Is a Dental Implant?
It replaces a single tooth completely from root to crown. Comprised of a titanium screw surgically inserted into the jaw bone, a metal alloy extension post, and a realistic porcelain crown, a dental implant faithfully imitates the appearance and oral function of a natural tooth. Plus, used in combination with bridgework or a full denture, dental implants can breathe new life into a heavily damaged smile.
The American Association of Endodontists says that dental implants last for decades and are highly reliable. This is because the jaw bone actually bonds to the titanium implant through something called osseointegration. Over time, supporting bone strengthens and increases in size and density, as opposed to other tooth replacements (such as conventional fixed bridgework or dentures) that just sit on top of the gums and hold the possibility of weakening the jawbone.
Requirements for Dental Implant Placement
At Pearlfection Dentistry in Frederick and Urbana, MD, our team of oral surgeons, periodontists, general doctors and prosthodontists work together to develop a treatment plan and place dental implants in patients who have good systemic health and enough bone in their jaws to accept the implant devices. They carefully examine teeth, gums, and bone structure through an eyes-on examination, digital X-rays, and special three-dimensional scans. They'll formulate a care plan suited to your needs and desires.
A Versatile Tooth Replacement
Dental implants offer great hope for patients with advanced diseases of the mouth, such as oral cancer. After remaking supporting bone and gum tissue after cancer surgery, many patients qualify for placement of dental implants as part of their full mouth reconstructions. Additionally, people with advanced tooth decay, failing restorations, or damage due to oral injury (falls and motor vehicle accidents) may take advantage of dental implants.
Caring for Implants
It's not hard at all. If you're used to brushing twice a day and flossing daily as the American Dental Association recommends, you'll do well with implants. A nutritious diet keeps gums and bones healthy, as does smoking cessation. Smokers can qualify for implant placement. however, implant sites remain much healthier in a tobacco-free environment.

What's a reliable and realistic way to cover dark stains, large cracks and chips, small gaps, and other defects? Porcelain veneers from Pearlfection Dentistry in Frederick and Urbana, MD, of course! Composed of premier porcelain, these thin, realistically-colored laminates strengthen and beautify teeth for good.
The Cosmetic Dentistry Consultation
A consultation helps your dentist determine the type of services you need to achieve the best-looking smile possible. At this meeting, the doctor will do a thorough oral examination, take X-rays or any other necessary types of imaging, and make impressions of your teeth and gums as needed. From there, you'll receive a detailed treatment plan. If porcelain veneers appear on that plan, expect to make two additional visits to the office.
Creation and Placement
To place veneers, your dentist first must remove about 1/2 millimeter of enamel from the front side of each tooth receiving a laminate. This resurfacing will allow the veneers to fit comfortably inside the mouth. Your dentist will also caution you that the change is permanent.
While you wait for your customized veneers to come from the dental lab, you'll wear functional and realistic temporaries. Your dentist will then remove them when you return in a week or so for the final placement of your permanent veneers.
Placement is a careful process. Your doctor will first try-on and adjust your veneers before securing them with the actual bonding adhesive. This process also entails varying the color and the thickness of the glue as needed to achieve the right look and proper bond. To finish, the doctor will cure the adhesive with a special light.
There are many perks to veneers, one of which is their beautiful resiliency. They hold up well to the ordinary wear and tear of biting and chewing, retaining their sheen, shape and color. They are easy to clean, as your usual brushing and flossing routine keeps them stain and plaque-free. Because they restore just the side of the tooth which shows when you smile, your veneers will also require far less tooth reshaping than porcelain crowns do. Finally, dentists often use veneers together with other cosmetic services as part of a comprehensive smile makeover, putting you on the path for a full cosmetic overhaul.

Dental Bonding and Cosmetic Contouring
If you only have small cosmetic cracks, chips, discolorations and gaps between your teeth you may think that you still have to get a dental restoration in order to improve your appearance but think again. You’ll be happy to know that these are two of the simplest methods for improving the shape, size and color of one or more teeth.
Bonding uses a tooth-colored resin that can easily be molded and contoured around imperfections to mask them, while cosmetic contouring requires our Frederick dentists to remove small bits of enamel to alter the length and shape of a tooth. Both are completely non-invasive and are the least expensive cosmetic dentistry option you can find.
Do yellow dental stains from years of smoking or coffee drinking have you hiding your smile? Do you hate flashing a smile because you know your smile is riddled with discolorations? Luckily, our in-office whitening system may be all you need to remove stubborn stains and to get your smile several shades whiter after just one session. You’ll walk out of our office in an hour with a completely revamped smile that you’ll immediately notice.
If you are dealing with more moderate-to-severe cosmetic flaws that bonding and contouring can’t tackle then this might just be a job for dental veneers. These tooth-colored shells are custom-designed to cover the entire front surface of your teeth so that you can get a smile that is drastically improved. Whether you want to cover gaps, severe discolorations or a poorly formed tooth, veneers can easily hide these cosmetic issues and more.
Invisalign, Tigani Aligners, and other clear orthodontic aligners
If you are a teen or adult who loathes the idea of wearing braces but could greatly benefit from a straight smile then it might be time you talked to us about whether these nearly invisible orthodontic systems can provide you with the results you need. Whether you are looking to close gaps between teeth or fix crowded or overlapping teeth, these clear orthodontic aligners may be all you need to finally get the smile results you want.
