Let’s figure out which type of braces suits your smile goals while fitting your lifestyle.
No matter whether a child, teen or adult walks through our doors, if someone is looking to fix their crowded and misaligned smiles then our dental team is here to help. With our Frederick and Urbana MD, dentists, Dr. Jared Lawson, Dr. EJ Stringer and Dr. Amadeus Lopez; periodontist Dr. Ashley Seals, oral surgeon, Dr. Brian Chang; endodontist, Dr. Pratik Patel; and orthodontist, Dr. Stephen Tigani, on your side, we are sure to find the right orthodontic treatment to fit you.
These are the type of braces that typically come to mind when thinking of orthodontic treatment; however, they have gotten a bit of a makeover over the decades. Metal braces have become sleeker and the wires have become thinner, making the braces less bulky and cumbersome. Traditional braces can also be made from tooth-colored materials to make them more discreet.
Traditional braces are great for patients of all ages, especially for those dealing with complex or complicated tooth movements or for cases in which the jaws need to be moved or realigned.
Most teens and adults balk at the idea of needing braces; however, having a straight smile will not only improve your appearance but can also reduce your risk for cavities, gum disease or dental damage (e.g. cracks or fractures). If the idea of wearing traditional braces has you running for the hills, then it’s time you asked our Frederick dentists about Invisalign.
This clear, almost invisible system uses flexible, plastic aligners that are custom-made to fit over your teeth. They look similar to mouthguards or whitening trays, but each aligner is designed to gradually shift teeth into the proper position. Aligners are also completely removable, so you can take them out before mealtimes or before brushing and flossing.
Of course, since you have our expert dental team right here to help get you the smile you want you may decide to use our very own Tigani Orthodontic Aligners (TOA) to achieve the perfect results. This system is not Invisalign; however, it does still use a set of removable, clear aligners, which are worn for up to 3 weeks before replacing them with the next set in your treatment plan. Tigani aligners can often be a less expensive option than Invisalign.
Aligners should be worn for at least 20 hours a day, but you may choose to remove them before a special occasion, important date or work presentation. This is a great option for those in the professional world who don’t want everyone to know that they have braces.

Find out if you or your child’s smile could potentially benefit from getting braces or Invisalign.
It’s pretty rare to be born with a perfectly straight smile, but that’s okay. Our Urbana and Frederick, MD orthodontists and dentists have you covered. Find out the perfect time to consider getting orthodontic treatment and the telltale signs that it might improve your smile and your oral health.
Here are some of most common situations that can easily be treated with braces or Invisalign:
This is often the most common reason anyone comes to see our Urbana and Frederick general dentist for treatment. Crowding simply means that there isn’t enough room for all of your teeth to fit properly, so teeth crowd and overlap one another. Since teeth are so close together it can make it difficult to properly clean between teeth and even increase your chances for decay or gum disease. By treating this issue at an early age, we can improve your oral health for the long run.
If you smile do you notice that the top teeth actually cover the bottom teeth? If so, then you may have an overbite. In an overbite, the top teeth stick out further than the bottom teeth. A severe overbite can increase your risk of damage to the front teeth or put too much pressure on other teeth and lead to injury.
If you smile and your upper front teeth rest behind your lower teeth this is known as an underbite. This is the result of disproportionate jaw sizes and an underbite can cause issues speaking and chewing, and can affect the structure and appearance of your face.
If you notice that your front teeth do not touch when you smile then you are probably dealing with an open bite. This can lead to speech problems (e.g. lisps) and difficulty eating and chewing.
If you or your child is exhibiting any of these orthodontic issues, it’s time you sat down and talked to us as soon as possible. We will do a free consultation to asses whether braces or Invisalign could help your smile. From mild to severe issues, we are able to tackle them with our wide variety of orthodontic treatments.
