Are there ways to prevent sleep apnea and snoring?

You might be surprised to discover that there are ways to reduce your risk of developing sleep apnea. Some of these preventive measures include,

  • Maintaining a healthy weight (those who are overweight or obese are at a higher risk for developing OSA)
  • Avoiding alcohol, stimulants, and sedatives
  • Quitting smoking
  • Making sure that you get enough sleep every night
  • Sleeping on your side with your head slightly raised

If you are dealing with nasal congestion or obstruction it’s important to address this issue with a qualified ENT doctor, as this problem could increase your risk for snoring or sleep apnea symptoms. For minor nasal issues, you may want to try a neti pot to clean out the sinuses or wear nasal strips to bed.

How can a dentist help with my snoring and sleep apnea symptoms?

A dentist probably isn’t the first person you’d think of when it comes to treating these sleep issues; however, our Urbana and Frederick, MD, family dentists specialize in sleep dentistry. This means that we can provide custom oral appliances that can be used to combat both snoring and sleep apnea.

This simple dental device is worn over the upper and lower teeth (similar to a nightguard) when you sleep and helps to keep the airways open so that you don’t deal with obstructions and pauses in breathing. Oral appliance therapy is ideal for patients dealing with non-sleep apnea-related snoring, as well as mild to moderate forms of obstructive sleep apnea.
