What’s new – “It’s a Laserâ€

Austin Powers had the wrong idea about lasers, well at least when it comes to using them for medicine and in this case dental medicine.  Lasers aren’t all about shooting people in space, lasers allow very precise cutting, with a concentrated, high temperature light source, allowing procedures to be done quickly, painlessly, and with very little bleeding.  PearlFection Dentistry is truly on the cutting edge of technology.  We have purchased a soft tissue laser system to be used for certain procedures.   “Why a laser for a dentist”, you might ask.  Laser technology is being applied to all sort of medical procedures these days to enhance patient care.  PearlFection Dentistry has made the considerable investment in both time and dollars, to ensure we can provide the best care possible for our patients.

What are the advantages of laser technology in dentistry?

  • No blood – Because the incision is done at such high temperatures and in such a small cutting zone, the wound is cauterized immediately.  The result of this cauterization affect is small capillaries are immediately sealed.  No blood, means no need for sutures, more rapid healing and very little swelling.
  • Less pain - In some instances using a laser can minimize pain because the affected area of treatment is minimized, therefore, less anesthesia is needed.
  • Less worry -  Did you know that laser’s are silent? Unlike tradition dental drills a laser makes no noise.

What procedures might use a soft tissue laser?

  • Gum disease - Lasers are used to reshape gums and remove bacteria during root canal procedures.
  • Frenectomy – Lasers are in oral surgery to free the lip from the gum when the thin flap of skin is inhibiting free movement of the lip.
  • Biopsy or lesion removal - Lasers can be used to remove a small piece of tissue (called a biopsy) so that it can be examined for cancer. Lasers are also used to remove lesions in the mouth and relieve the pain of canker sores.
  • Teeth whitening - Lasers are used to speed up in-office teeth whitening procedures. A peroxide bleaching solution, applied to the tooth surface, is ''activated" by laser energy, which speeds up of the whitening process.

We don’t use lasers on that many dental procedures but in the cases where we have a choice between scalpel or laser, you might just see your doctor pull out a laser knife.
